The principle

Battigia downloads the whole map of the sargassum risk from a relay of ours and does every match between a place and its coast on your phone. The relay never learns where you are, where you are going, or when. We never receive, store or see any of your data. There is nothing for us to sell, lose or hand over, because there is nothing on our side to begin with.

What the app keeps

Battigia records what you put into it:

  • your favourite destinations
  • the trips you entered, and which imported trips you chose to hide
  • how many days before departure you want a reminder
  • the last map of the risk received, so the app and the widget open on something

Where it lives

On your device. Favourites and trips also sync through your iCloud key-value storage, so your iPad has them too; we cannot open, read or list it. Battigia has no account and no other storage.

What it asks permission for

Every one of these is optional. Refuse any of them and the rest of the app keeps working.

Notifications
Asked when you save your first trip, never at launch. They carry the reminder before departure, computed on your phone; no server sends anything. Say no and everything else works.
Location
Never asked. Battigia does not need to know where you are.

What leaves the device

The app has no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising and no third-party kit of any kind. What it does send, it sends only to the services below, and only for what you asked it to do:

Our relay, battigia.nidello.ca
The app asks it for two files: today’s risk along the whole coast, and the month-by-month calendar. The requests carry nothing but the fingerprint of the copy already on your phone — no location, no destination, no trip, no device identifier. The relay keeps no log of who asked; what it stores is the public data itself, one map per day since July 2025.
Apple Maps
Draws the map. Receives what you type in a free search, the point of coast you touch when it is outside our list of destinations (to give it a name), and the destination if you ask for directions. That exchange is between you and Apple.
The App Store
Only if you tap through to another Nidello app from the About screen.

None of it reaches us. We have no server in any of these paths, and we never receive a copy.

Other Nidello apps

If you use Bivio or Cartina, Battigia reads the trips they leave for the other Nidello apps on your phone — dates and places, nothing else — and shows the ones by the sea. Nothing goes back to them, and nothing leaves the phone.

The risk Battigia shows is regional, computed by NOAA and the University of South Florida from satellite images in an experimental product — never a forecast for a particular beach. Battigia is affiliated with neither.

Your data is yours

Export your favourites, the trips you entered and your reminder setting as a JSON file, from Settings, whenever you want. Delete the app and what was only on the device is gone; favourites and trips synced to iCloud go when you remove Battigia from your iCloud settings. We cannot recover any of it for you, because we never had it.

Children

The app is not directed at children and collects nothing about anyone, of any age.

Changes to this page

If the app ever starts doing something this page does not describe, this page changes first. The date at the top says when it last did.

Your rights

Quebec’s Law 25 and similar laws elsewhere give you the right to access, correct and delete the personal information a business holds about you. In our case the answer is the same every time: we hold none. Your information is on your device and in your own iCloud, where you can already read, change and delete all of it yourself.
